Why air freight charges by space as well as weight
Understand chargeable weight, packing dimensions and service assumptions before comparing air freight or express quotations.
Light products can occupy a large amount of aircraft space. Air freight and express services therefore may compare actual weight with a dimensional or volumetric weight and charge the higher figure. The divisor and measurement rules depend on the carrier and service, so a catalogue weight is not enough for a reliable quotation.
Request packed measurements
Ask for the number of packages, external dimensions of each package and gross weight after final packing. Clarify whether dimensions include pallets, protective corners or irregular protrusions. If packing is not complete, label the figures as estimates and plan for remeasurement.
Check the carrier calculation
Ask the forwarder or express provider to show the chargeable weight calculation and the service used. Do not apply one online formula to every quotation. Minimum charges, rounding rules and oversized-package surcharges can change the result.
Reduce volume without weakening protection
Discuss carton design, disassembly, nesting or removal of unnecessary void only if the product remains adequately protected and compliant with handling requirements. A smaller carton that increases damage risk is not a transport saving. Approve any packing change before it is applied to the order.
Compare transit and delivery scope
A fast airport-to-airport rate is not the same as a door-to-door express service. Compare pickup, export handling, customs support, destination charges, delivery area and remote surcharges. Confirm whether the transit estimate starts at pickup, flight departure or another milestone.
Decision checklist
- Package count and final dimensions
- Gross weight per package
- Carrier volumetric divisor and rounding
- Oversize or remote surcharges
- Pickup and delivery scope
- Remeasurement before booking
Where CHAOSHUO can help
CHAOSHUO can coordinate final packing information and forwarder questions in China. The carrier or forwarder remains responsible for confirming chargeable weight and service terms.
General trade guidance, not transaction-specific legal, tax, customs, insurance, banking or technical advice. Requirements, access, third-party services, fees and responsibilities are confirmed separately for each project.
