International-buyer meeting around product requirements
A useful market assessment starts with the product, intended buyer and commercial questions—not a generic list of companies.

China can be a significant opportunity, but national market size does not prove that a particular product, specification or price point will work. A useful first assessment turns a broad ambition into testable questions: who may buy, why they would change supplier, how the product reaches them and what could prevent a sale.

China’s scale is context, not proof of demand

China’s National Bureau of Statistics reported a year-end population of 1,404.89 million in 2025, total retail sales of consumer goods of RMB 50,120.2 billion and online retail sales of physical goods of RMB 13,092.3 billion. Those figures describe the scale of the economy; they do not show demand for one product or confirm that its price, claims or route to market are suitable.

For a business decision, the denominator must become smaller: the relevant industry, buyer role, application, region, price band and purchasing trigger. A niche industrial component and a consumer beauty product may both enter China, but they require very different evidence and channels.

Build a product-market hypothesis before collecting leads

QuestionWhat to defineEvidence to seek
Who has the problem?Importer, distributor, brand, retailer, manufacturer, institution or end userCurrent product range, applications, customers and buying role
Why this product?Performance, design, cost, supply reliability, exclusivity or another credible advantageComparable offers, buyer comments, specifications and unmet needs
Where would it sell?Relevant region, industry cluster, online channel, dealer network or direct-sales routeChannel activity, regional concentration and route-to-market evidence
Can the economics work?Indicative export price, logistics, duties, channel margin, service and promotion costsA transparent price model with assumptions clearly labelled
What may block entry?Registration, labelling, standards, data, claims, IP, contracts or local serviceQuestions for qualified customs, legal, testing or regulatory providers

The U.S. International Trade Administration advises companies to consider China’s regional and sector differences and to choose partners carefully. It also notes that routes to market can involve distributors, agents, trading companies and e-commerce. That is why the assessment should identify a plausible route rather than assume one national channel.

Use an evidence ladder instead of one optimistic signal

A sensible sequence

  1. Desk research: define the product, comparable offers, buyer categories, likely channels and obvious barriers.
  2. Chinese-language and local checks: review how the category is described, sold and discussed inside China, including regional differences.
  3. Company screening: identify organizations that match the agreed buyer profile and record why each one appears relevant.
  4. Client review: confirm the shortlist and outreach message before contact begins.
  5. Agreed first contact: ask focused commercial questions and record the channel, response and unanswered points.
  6. Decision report: separate verified facts, indications, assumptions and the next evidence needed.

A marketplace listing, website visit or social-media post can be a useful clue. It is not the same as a verified buyer need. Equally, one positive conversation is not proof of scalable demand. The objective of an early project is to reduce uncertainty enough to decide whether to test further, change the target or stop.

What a first China market-development project can deliver

CHAOSHUO can structure a tailored project around one product category and an agreed target-customer hypothesis. Depending on scope, the work may include an initial market view, buyer-profile definition, researched company candidates, local-language checks, agreed first contact and a results report.

The number of companies, contact activity, timing and agency fee are agreed after reviewing the product and objective. Research and outreach are the deliverables; replies, enquiries, distribution agreements and orders cannot be guaranteed.
