When should you inspect? Match the check to the production risk
Compare pre-production, during-production and pre-shipment checks instead of relying on one final visit for every order.
A final inspection is useful when enough goods are complete, but it cannot always recover time lost to the wrong material or an early production error. Different checking stages answer different questions. The appropriate combination depends on order value, product complexity, supplier history and the cost of correcting a problem late.
Check readiness before production
A pre-production review can confirm that the current specification, key materials, artwork, samples and production plan are available. It is particularly useful when a new supplier, custom material or new packaging is involved. It does not prove how the finished batch will perform.
Look during production when correction is still possible
A during-production check can compare early output with requirements and review actual progress. It may identify a repeating defect before the whole batch is made. The visit should occur at a meaningful completion stage and should identify which units or lines were available, rather than describing the entire order from a small early sample.
Use final checking for release evidence
A pre-shipment inspection can review a defined sample of completed and packed goods, quantities, workmanship and packaging. Confirm the completion percentage required before attendance. A rushed visit while goods are unfinished can produce a report that does not represent the final shipment.
Connect stages with corrective actions
Keep findings from each stage and verify whether promised corrections appear in later goods. Repeated inspection without closing corrective actions only creates more reports. Assign responsibility, due dates and evidence for each material issue.
Decision checklist
- Risk that must be detected early
- Meaningful production stage
- Goods available for checking
- Inspection scope and method
- Corrective action owner
- Release decision and remaining risks
